“It is a wholesome and necessary thing for us to turn again to the earth and in the contemplation of her beauties to know of wonder and humility.” Rachel Carson

The Trustees feel it is important that you see what is being done with the land we are preserving for you, so do take a moment to explore with us. Working closely with Edward Martin of The Suffolk Archaelogical Unit, we have established that the earthwork was raised as a dam for the fish pond which covered a large area of the meadow referred to as MereMede on early maps. In the SE meadow, there is a deep pond and what appears to be a building platform. Early medieval, C15 pottery and artefacts have been found.

By working to lower the fertility of the meadows through grazing and cutting hay, significant flora is returning throughout the reserve. Areas with species indicative of ancient woodland are increasing in size and number.

Pond clearance work has improved the water quality and allowed the return of aquatic and emergent plants. The reserve is surrounded by cropped fields and forms an oasis within the modern agricultural landscape.
